Introduction to Shibori – April 28 & 29

April 28 & 29: 10 am — 5 pm

Location: Some Things Looming, Reading (directions)

Instructor: Kachina Martin

Skill Level: Intro/Refresher Course – experience is not required

Imagine a plain, white piece of silk…now fold it…twist it…bind it.  After dyeing, you’ll be amazed at the transformation!  This class will introduce the participant to shibori, the ancient Japanese fabric dyeing technique that utilizes a variety of methods – wrapping, tying, stitching, folding, twisting – to create richly textured patterns of color on fabric.  Students will focus on arashi shibori (pole wrapped), stitch resist shibori, and clamped shibori.  Participants will complete a series of finished pieces as well as fabric samples suitable for multiple uses.

A materials fee of $40, made payable to the instructor at the time of class will cover:  Procion dyebaths in a variety of colors, cotton fabrics, silk fabrics, and scarves

Supplies students should bring from home:

  • dust mask
  • carpet warp or similar weight of string
  • PVC piping – approx 30 – 40″ length, and 2″ or 4″ diameter
  • 5-6 gallon bucket
  • smaller buckets for washing and transporting wet items
  • 2 sets of wooden shapes – square or rounded, total of 4 any size
  • 4 clamps that can be submerged in water, and hold approx. 3″ material securely
