Instructor: Dan Hayward

Skill Level: All levels – No prior glass experience required

Description:  This workshop will launch you into the wide world of mosaics, focusing on the glass-on-glass form.  The format of the workshop is unique in that includes a combination of in-person instruction and assistance, work-at-home time, a Zoom session progress report, and in-person finishing.

Day 1 begins in the PA Guild of Craftsmen studio, where Stained glass Master Artisan Dan Hayward will provide an overview of the mosaic form and the simple tools, material, and techniques to turn a collection of scrap glass into a pleasing work of art. Participants will develop a design and choose the backing for the work (clear glass or mirror) and how they wish to frame the project for hanging. They may select glass from the extensive stained glass remnants and scrap which Dan has accumulated from his many stained glass classes.  When ready, each person will begin his or her project with Dan’s guidance.  At the end of the day, you will take home your work-in-progress, collection of remnants and scraps, and a loaned tool kit.

During the time between on-site sessions, you will work at home, steadily creating your mosaic. Between on-site Day 1 and on-site Day 2 of the workshop, Dan will host a Zoom session where each person may “show and tell”, discuss challenges and ask questions.

On Day 2, participants re-convene at PGC with their fully finished – except for grouting – projects and  Dan will guide everyone through the process of applying grout to fill the spaces between the glass pieces glued to the backing.

Outcome: The result will be something you may admire in a window, just like a piece of stained glass, or use it as a decorative piece to catch one’s eye in any room.

Registration fee includes glass, tools, and supplies.
