Create a Pouch, Handbag, or Table Mat!

Using a portable loom that is provided and ready to use, students enjoy exploring tapestry weaving while making a colorful and functional bag. Using lofty, colorful wool, basic tapestry techniques are taught, in the Southwest tradition. The slow and rhythmic routine of weaving and packing the wool in with a hand beater builds the design, row by row, from solid color areas, to stripes, to simple geometric design elements. If time allows, a short, cultural overview of Southwest tapestry is included in the class. No experience needed.

A materials fee of $15 is included in your tuition.

Notes:  Students should bring their own scissors and tape measures. Please, no perfume. This workshop will be conducted in the instructor’s Lancaster-based home studio and there may be a cat walking through.

Instructor:  Susan Weaver has been a handweaving instructor for 27 years. After returning from Arizona, where she studied SW tapestry and participated in numerous fine craft shows, she worked for 8 years as a Textile Educator at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum in Lancaster, PA. She sells a variety of her handwoven items, locally & nationally, as well as being a member of the PA Guild of Craftsmen and the Central PA Guild of Weavers. She is currently selling her newly-released textile book, Handwoven Tape ~ Understanding and Weaving Early American and Contemporary Tape.
