My name is Thomas Scott Ankrum III and I've been a woodturner since 2008 using a mini lathe to create various forms into art as well as useful and practical items. I started selling my woodturnings, under the business name Ankrum's Woodcrafts, in 2017; making small turnings, such as pens, bottles stoppers and bowls.. My business was successful enough to allow me to include a larger lathe and I use both in my shop.
I do a lot of inlay work, in which I use various colored stone and other natural materials to create unique one of a kind pieces resulting from cracks or intentional carving or groves in the wood. My business philosophy is simple: Only products from nature go on my lathe. That means no plastic (no acrylic, or resin of any type). If I can't put it in my compost it does not go on my lathe.
My woodturnings come from local and select environmentally responsible exotic woods. They include bowls, vessels, goblets, steins, kitchen items, pens, bottle stoppers, and much more. I like to experiment with unfamiliar styles and techniques to come up with products that are unique and unforgettable. Sometimes this means solid wood pieces with spalting, grain variations, figure, or other unique characteristics. I also experiment with laminations and segmented turnings. Lately my focus has been on turning really large bowls and platters. Some are greater than 16 inches in diameter while a great many are designed for salad serving bowls, in which case they are about 14" in diameter and 4 inches deep.
I attend several local craft shows a year from small to large; all of which are posted in the events sections of my Facebook page. You will also see everything I produce posted as well. So please come to my next show, share my page and thanks for visiting.
